Public Health Education
"Sagot Ni Dok" and "Usapang Pangkalusugan" are segments in the KKMK TV program that discusses necessary information on a condition or disease in a couple minutes. Proper accurate information can lead to a life being saved. This is aired on national television in the Philippines.
Batang K Program
Since 1989, Kapwa Ko Mahal Ko (KKMK) has been running a support group for children with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) called Batang Kapwa (Batang K or BK for short). ALL is a serious type of cancer that commonly affects children below ten years old. Through religious compliance with chemotherapy, lasting a minimum of 120 weeks for girls and 140 weeks for boys, these children have a very good chance of overcoming this disease. Modern medical science has already found ways to arrest the growth of this type of cancer in children. Even with the support of the Philippine Health Insurance Z package (Php 500,000.00), the family would have to cover at least an additional Php 450,000.
A child with cancer can push the entire family into poverty and despair. Mounting debt occurs as as these indigent families try to meet the needs for regular and continuous chemotherapy. Many indigent families can not afford the critical last few months of treatment. There was, and still is, a need to help make these children cancer warriors, who fight this disease with patience, perseverance and faith. To respond to this need, KKMK launched a medical and psycho-social assistance program for children with curable cancer.
The project continues to drum up support for:
- medical care and chemotherapy
- support group activities for psycho-social needs of children with cancer
- counselling and support activities for indigent families of children with cancer
- learning activities for children, who may have to stop schooling because of chemotherapy
- information campaigns to detect early signs of cancer in children
